Barrick Gold – Cortez Pipeline Retort Modifications

Reliable Controls was retained by Barrick Gold Corporation to provide assessment, recommendations, engineering and commissioning of the Retort process modifications at the Cortez Hills gold mine. A retort process is used to remove the mercury vapors present at the smelting operation, thus reducing the use of respirators. After a complete engineering and regulatory review of the retort process and facilities, Reliable Controls provided controls engineering and other services including:

Chaired and conducted the HAZOP meetings.
Modified and added equipment to the existing P&ID drawings.
Created the electrical schematics.
Developed the PLC program, HMI program, and SCADA system.
Interfaced existing equipment with new control PLC.
Procured the required equipment, commissioned and tested equipment as per design and permit.
Created data historian trends to track compliance required by permit.
RCC provided product specifications, construction observation, and commissioning for new Retort units. The new automated process will control external conditions to the retort oven in compliance with the Permit to Operate issued by the State of Nevada and most importantly ensure the safety of the plant operators and personnel.

Reliable Controls Retort Modification Project provided solutions for the following areas of operation:

Capture and handling of exhaust gases.
Operating within the parameters issued by the State of Nevada.
Work practices during the process including heating, mercury condensation, and carbon bed scrubbing.
Monitoring and record-keeping.
